General Maintenance

Feeds Tape Too Short

Feeds Tape Too Long

Slow Tape Feed

Frequent Tape Jams

Power On No Dispensing

Key Switch Not Operating

Machine Runs Constant

Not Cutting Tape

Water Leaking

POWER ON - NO TAPE DISPENSING

The most common cause is a defective or improperly adjusted Safety Switch -400SafetySwitch (Ref FF112). Turn on the tape machine. If the pilot light is on and the Top Heater is heating, yet none of the key switches will dispense tape, the probable cause is the Safety Switch.

Before Any Maintenance Procedure - UNPLUG THE MACHINE

Quick Safety Switch Check

Here's a quick way to check the Safety Switch. Unplug the machine. Remove the Key Drum  & Access Hole Cover. The Safety Switch is located towards the front of the large Measuring Wheel (see Service Figures 10 & 11 below).

First, check the wires and make sure they are connected to the Safety Switch!

On 555 S Models: Service Figure 10

The Switch Trip Lever -  400TripLever  (Ref EA82B) shuts the safety switch off. Check this lever. Make sure it is not broken. Check the spring 400LeverSpring (Ref EA80) to make sure it is not broken. If the lever is bent up or broken or the spring is broken, replace them. Next, check to make sure the Safety Switch is shut off. Push the small white button on the top of the switch down. Try plugging the machine back in and see if it operates. If it does, the problem was that the Safety Switch did not shut back off.  You may need to replace either the lever or spring. If the white button was down, or pushing it down does not reset the machine, you may need to replace the Safety Switch (see below)

On 555 L Models: Service Figure 11

The Safety Switch is screwed into the Safety Switch Bracket on the side frame. When the Bumper Cup Arm returns  to home position, it has to push up the copper Safety Switch Spring to reset the switch. Check to make sure this lever is operating properly. If it is broken, you can order just the Safety Switch Bracket .

IF THE  SPRING IS NOT BROKEN TRY THIS -

Rotate the Measuring Wheel by hand and hold it. Push the small white button on the Safety Switch down. Release the Measuring Wheel, Did it push the small white button up  when it returned to home position ? If not, adjust the Safety Switch Reset Screw or Safety Switch Reset Spring so that it pushes the white button on the Safety Switch up when the Bumper Cup Arm is in home position. You can try re-bending the spring or moving the screw in or out.

If the above procedures fail to restart the machine, you may need to replace the Safety Switch or check the wiring harnesses for any broken wires.

Replacing Safety Switch ("S" or "L")

Tools Required: Soldering Iron/Solder

1. Unplug machine, remove Key Drum & Access Hole Cover. Locate Safety

    Switch (see Figure 10 for 555S or Figure 11 for 555 L).

2. Remove wires from old switch with soldering iron.

3. Remove both screws that hold Safety Switch to bracket

4. Screw new Safety Switch onto bracket

5. We find it helpful to cut just a short piece of the wiring off to expose

a new surface before re-soldering wiring to new Safety Switch
